RetinaRisk™, created by Risk ehf., is the first validated decision support system for management and follow-up of patients with diabetes or diabetic retinopathy. The objective is to provide point of care risk assessment for eye care specialists and more effective communication with patients and other providers.

The RetinaRisk™ system is suitable for use by optometrists, ophthalmologists, primary care physicians, diabetes specialists including diabetes educators, pharmacists, or any health care provider who examines, counsels and/or treats patients with diabetes mellitus.

Our decision support system takes into account six primary variables known to affect progression of diabetic retinopathy. Results of clinical examination are combined with these variables to determine individual patient risk and quantitatively demonstrate how improvement of modifiable risk factors (blood glucose, HbA1c, blood pressure) may improve that risk. Assessment of other emerging risk factors (e.g. sleep apnea, diabetic kidney disease, obesity) allows the eye care professional to qualitatively refine patient risk and his/her clinical recommendations.

The core of our product is an algorithm developed and validated by Risk Medical Solutions (RMS). RetinaRisk™ was developed by RMS and optometric diabetes specialist, A. Paul Chous, MA, OD, FAAO.

The RetinaRisk™ team is qualified, energetic and passionate about great diabetes care, with over 30 years of academic and clinical experience in managing and treating diabetes and diabetic retinopathy. We have a vision to improve diabetes care and delivery by applying technology and epidemiological data to improve outcomes, focus on patients at highest risk, and save money.

The Collaboration

The RetinaRisk™ system was developed by a unique collaboration amongst an ophthalmologic retinal specialist, an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes, an optometrist specializing in diabetes care and education, a team of other physicians, as well as experts in mathematics, biostatistics, computer science, epidemiology, health care economics and business.

Each specialist brought their unique clinical training, experience and professional expertise to bear on the task of creating an accurate, powerful, easy-to-use system for eye care providers, primary care physicians, endocrinologists, other health care personnel, and patients alike.

Our expert team solicited feedback from a variety of stakeholders, including numerous and varied health care professionals and people living with diabetes, to create and refine features including customized communications, patient education materials, and top-flight diabetes resources for health care providers.
